Vinny Faherty scored a hat-trick as St. Patrick’s Athletic beat UCD 5-0 at Richmond Park tonight to keep their tenuous title hopes alive, reducing Sligo Rovers lead at the top of the table to five points with their biggest win of the league season.
St Pat’s lead from the 16th minute when Jake Kelly confidently slid the ball home from Chris Forrester’s pass.
Faherty got his first on 58mins after good work by Ryan Coombes and Anto Flood before heading home his second from a Forrester cross on 66mins.
Forrester provided another assist for Flood to tap in the fourth goal on 72mins with Faherty completing his hat-trick five minutes from time.
A Declan O’Brien penalty and second goal from Ryan Brennan gave Drogheda United a 2-1 home win over Shelbourne as they also stay in the hunt, a point behind St. Pat’s.
O'Brien shot home from the spot on 20mins after he'd been fouled by Glenn Cronin.
Drogheda’s Gavin Brennan and Gareth Matthews of Shels were both sent off in the 58th minute following a dust up between the pair.
Ryan Brennan then doubled Drogheda's lead in the 85th minute, following up to scoop home the rebound after O'Brien's shot was cleared off the line.
Substitute Philly Hughes threw Shels a lifeline when getting a goal back in the 88th minute, but Drogheda held out.
