Transfers update: Big moves start on deadline day

Nigel de Jong left Manchester City for AC Milan while Scott Sinclair completed his move to the Etihad Stadium as the first big moves of transfer deadline day began to roll in.

Dutch international De Jong, 27, underwent a medical this morning before completing his move to the San Siro on a three-year deal.

A statement on the Italian club’s website read: “AC Milan announces that it has bought outright Manchester City’s Nigel de Jong, who has signed a contract until June 30, 2015.”

While defensive midfielder De Jong left the Premier League champions, following the arrival of Jack Rodwell from Everton earlier in the transfer window, Sinclair sealed his switch from Swansea for an initial fee of £6.2m as he filled the gap left by Adam Johnson’s move to Sunderland.

“I’m just glad everything is settled and that I’m now a City player,” said 23-year-old Sinclair, who featured for Team GB at the Olympics.

“There were times when I thought it might not happen so I’m relieved that I’m here and I can’t wait to get started.”

The two deals are expected to be part of a busy day for City boss Roberto Mancini.

He remains hopeful of bringing in defender Matija Nastasic from Fiorentina, with Stefan Savic set to move in the opposite direction, while City have also been linked with Inter Milan defender Maicon and Benfica midfielder Javi Garcia.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, who allowed £35m striker Andy Carroll to join West Ham on loan last night, has also offloaded Charlie Adam. The Scotland midfielder has joined Stoke on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £4m.

Jay Spearing is another to leave the Reds after he joined Bolton on a season-long loan.

Rodgers has been looking to bring in Clint Dempsey from Fulham, but Aston Villa have agreed a fee for the United States international, although it is understood his preferred option is a move to Anfield.

Liverpool’s Merseyside rivals Everton, meanwhile, were closing in on the signing of Bryan Oviedo from FC Copenhagen after agreeing a fee for the Costa Rica international.

Elsewhere, Rafael van der Vaart looks to be heading out of Tottenham while Dimitar Berbatov could possibly return to White Hart Lane.

Van der Vaart is heading to Germany to undergo a medical with former club Hamburg, although no fee has yet been agreed for the 29-year-old.

Tottenham had initially been holding out for £14m for the midfielder, but a deal at a lower price may be in the offing.

“I can confirm that Rafael is on his way to Hamburg now for a medical,” his agent Robert Geerlings told Press Association Sport.

While the Dutchman may be set to leave north London, Berbatov could yet return to Spurs, despite appearing set to make a move to Fulham.

Cottagers boss Martin Jol, who has already added Sunderland’s Kieran Richardson to his squad today, had spoken confidently of completing a move for the Bulgarian, but Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson insists a deal is not yet done.

He said: “I wouldn’t be surprised if he was at Tottenham. There are rumours going around. I do not think it is settled at Fulham.”

Spurs, who have traditionally been busy on deadline day, have also been linked with swoops for Porto midfielder Joao Moutinho and Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris while full-back Danny Rose has left to join Sunderland on loan.

With Sinclair gone Swansea are set to complete the signing of Valencia winger Pablo Hernandez for £5.5m, the Spaniard is undergoing a medical at the Liberty Stadium.
