Butland comes in for England's injured Ruddy

John Ruddy’s withdrawal due to injury has further disrupted new England coach Roy Hodgson’s plans for Euro 2012, amid ongoing concerns over the fitness of Glen Johnson and Danny Welbeck.

Norwich goalkeeper Ruddy has been forced out of the tournament after suffering a broken finger in training yesterday.

The 25-year-old was one of two uncapped players, along with Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, included in Hodgson’s 23-man squad and had been given time off to proceed with his wedding on June 2, the day of England’s second warm-up friendly against Belgium.

Birmingham’s Jack Butland, who spent this season on loan at Cheltenham, will now move up from the standby list and will join the squad next week ahead of the Wembley clash, while Ruddy will still travel with the squad for tomorrow’s clash with Norway in Oslo.

Butland’s selection sees Bursaspor’s Scott Carson overlooked and also spells bad news for Great Britain Olympic coach Stuart Pearce, as the 19-year-old was thought to be pencilled in as first choice for that tournament.

He has represented England at age groups up to under-21 but his only first-team experience at club level has come in League Two this season with the Robins.
