Murphy to take over as CEO of Cork City
Basketball Ireland have announced that Timmy Murphy will be stepping down from his role as President of the association with immediate effect after his appointment as Chief Executive Officer of Cork City Football Club.
Murphy was appointed as President of Basketball Ireland in June 2009 following more than 25 years of experience at all strands of the game in Ireland.
His many achievements in the game included being the driving force behind the establishment of Glanmire Basketball Club in 1984, various senior roles with Cork Ladies from 1999 onwards, and his participation on the Southern Regional Board, the Board of Basketball Ireland and, most recently, on the Basketball Ireland Council.
Basketball Ireland Secretary General Bernard O’Byrne said: "Timmy has made a fantastic contribution to basketball in this country, not only as president but at all levels of our sport.
"We wish Timmy the best of luck in his new role and continued success for the future."
Mr Murphy said: "While I am excited and looking forward to my new role I am sad to be leaving my post as president of basketball Ireland.
"I have enjoyed working with the basketball community and helping to put basketball Ireland back on track. I wish everyone well for the future and thank everyone for their support."
