Hoops could face more UEFA action

Celtic should discover today if they are to face any action from UEFA after a flare was thrown from the section of the ground holding Hoops fans before last night’s Europa League game against Udinese at the Stadio Friuli.

The Hoops were this week fined £12,700 by European’s governing body after Celtic supporters were reported for “illicit chanting” in a previous Europa League fixture against Rennes at Parkhead.

Last night, a banner which was derogatory in its sentiments towards UEFA, was unfurled by the travelling fans behind the goal and there were several flares set alight, one of which was hurled onto the running track.

If either incident is included in reports from Greek referee Michael Koukoulakis and Danish match delegate Steen Dahrup then UEFA could launch an investigation.

A UEFA spokesman told Press Association Sport: “We expect to receive reports from the referee and the match official today or tomorrow at the latest.

“Based on what is in the official reports, we will decide if there is to be any investigation.”

After the 1-1 draw, which saw Celtic exit the tournament, manager Neil Lennon addressed the possibility of more UEFA action due to the actions of some fans.

“I didn’t see the flare before the game so I will have to wait and see what the outcome is,” he said.

“From where I was it looked like the supporters behaved themselves impeccably and I hope that (possible trouble) is not going to be the case.”
