Alvarez sacked by Colombia
Leonel Alvarez has been sacked as Colombia coach after four months at the helm.
The 46-year-old took up the reins following the resignation of Hernan Dario Gomez in August, and won the first of his three World Cup qualifiers – 2-1 in Bolivia – before a 1-1 draw against Venezuela and a 2-1 defeat against Argentina.
Federacion Colombiana de Futbol president Luis Bedoya revealed the organisation’s seven-man board had reached a unanimous decision to terminate Alvarez’s contract.
A statement on www.colfutbol.org read: “With respect to the senior Colombia team, president Bedoya announces the unanimous decision of the federation’s executive committee to terminate, as of this date, the employment contract of Leonel Alvarez.”
