Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan is out of tomorrow’s Barclays Premier League clash with Chelsea after returning injured from international duty.

The Ghana frontman damaged a hamstring in midweek and will join Republic of Ireland defender John O’Shea on the sidelines as he continues his recovery from a calf strain.

Gyan’s absence in particular represents a blow to manager Steve Bruce, whose side has scored just a single goal in its four games to date this season.

However, Bruce will have deadline-day loan signing Nicklas Bendtner at his disposal in the wake of his match-winning double for Denmark against Norway.

Bruce said: “He’s certainly a wonderfully gifted footballer, there’s no question about that. For his size and his presence and the way he is, he will be a big asset to us.

“We are delighted to have been able to bring him to the club. At that end of the pitch, we have not been able to score, so he will add to that.”
