New Rangers signing Lee Wallace had to settle for a place on the bench against former club Hearts in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League opener.

Wallace, recruited by the Scottish champions in midweek, was named among the substitutes but fellow new signing Juan Manuel Ortiz made his SPL debut from the start.

Skipper David Weir was suspended as new boss Ally McCoist took charge of his first competitive game.

Hearts handed league debuts to Danny Grainger, John Sutton and Mehdi Taouil but another summer signing, Jamie Hamill, was suspended.

Rangers: McGregor, Whittaker, Bougherra, Broadfoot, Papac, McCulloch, Juanma Ortiz, Davis, Edu, Naismith, Jelavic.

Subs: Alexander, Fleck, Wallace, Healy, Wylde, Bendiksen, Hemmings.
