Students taught harsh lesson by Derry
UCD 0 Derry City 3
Three goals in 17 second half minutes eased record nine-times winners Derry City into the semi-finals of the EA Sports Cup at the UCD Bowl.
Though UCD were virtually at full-strength, a second string Derry comfortably held their own until the break.
Stephen Kenny’s side then struck for the lead within three minutes of the restart.
Latching onto Patrick McEleney’s though ball, winger Stephen McLaughlin raced in to shoot confidently past keeper Ger Barron.
Ruairi Harkin doubled the lead on 58 minutes, shooting home after a shot from McEleney had been cleared off the line by Paul O’Conor.
Michael McCrudden sealed Derry’s passage with the third goal four minutes later.
It might have been more but for a 74th penalty miss by David McDaid, who’s spot kick hit a post after UCD defender Sean Harding was sent off for hauling down McLaughlin.
