Dennehy to the rescue as Rovers salvage point
Shamrock Rovers 2 Dundalk 2
A stoppage time equaliser from Billy Dennehy completed a dramatic comeback as champions Shamrock Rovers salvaged a point at Tallaght Stadium.
Marc Griffin’s double appeared to have injury-hit Dundalk set for victory.
But out-of-sorts Rovers battled back with substitute Chris Turner rifling home on 79 minutes to set up a grandstand finish.
A denouement that duly arrived on 92 minutes when winger Dennehy got his head to Pat Sullivan’s cross to loop the ball over keeper Peter Cherrie.
Griffin had given Dundalk a 23rd minute lead when he calmly tucked home after Keith Ward interchanged passes with Mark Quigley to put the 20-year old in on goal.
Rovers were then undone from a set-piece for the second goal on 62 minutes.
Ross Gaynor whipped in a superbly flighted free kick from the right and Griffin out-jumped his marker to head home.
Hoops are now just a point clear at the top of the table with big games against Sligo Rovers and St. Patrick's Athletic up next.
