Bohemians have a mountain to climb after losing this first round, first leg tie at Dalymount Park.
Portadown took the lead on 44 minutes when Bohs’ midfielder Robert Bayly miscontrolled to present Kevin Braniff with the ball and he volleyed past Barry Murphy.
The Irish League side doubled their lead on the hour when Jordan Baker set-up Keith O’Hara to score.
Bohs, lasy year's champions, hit back within three minutes to make a match of it. Anto Flood crossed following a counterattack and Karl Somers provide the finish.
Bohs winger Killian Brennan was sent off following an elbowing incident on 77 minutes, promptly followed by Ports boss Ronnie McFaul for dissent.
