Draw sees Dundalk into quarters

Dundalk will meet Glentoran in the quarter-finals of the Setanta Sports Cup after putting out the other giants of the Irish League at Oriel Park tonight.

Leading 5-3 from the first leg, Dundalk had the ideal start in front of a big home support with the lead goal after 11 minutes.

Jason Byrne did well on the right to cross, and when Linfield failed to clear, Ross Gaynor pounced to shoot past Alan Blayney from 12 yards.

But the Bluemen hit back in first half stoppage time. Poor defending by Dundalk from Marcus Kane’s corner resulted in Michael Gault bundling the ball home.

Linfield pressed hard throughout the second half, with Jamie Mulgrew hitting a post late on, but Dundalk held out for a big win.
