Second half goals from from Thomas Stewart and Gary Twigg saw Shamrock Rovers take full advantage of Bohemians' shock defeat in Galway.
Rovers are now two points clear at the top of the table ahead of next Friday's final game at Bray Wanderers and thus within touching distance of their first title in 16 years.
Drogheda finished with nine men as this result confirmed their relegation.
Stewart finally put some gloss to Rovers' dominancce with the lead goal on 51 minutes. Craig Sives knocked down Danny Murphy's cross and Stewart stooped to head the ball over the line.
Twigg got his 20th league goal of the season to seal the win 12 minutes later, turning Jamie Harris to shoot past Robert Duggan.
Drogheda had ex-Rovers defender Corie Treacy sent off on 86 minutes following an off the ball incident.
Ryan Brennan was then also dismissed for a bad challenge just ahead of the final whistle.
