Tottenham and England striker Jermain Defoe today admitted using a hand-held mobile phone while driving.

A lawyer entered a guilty plea on Defoe’s behalf prior to a hearing before the magistrate’s court in Witham, Essex.

Defoe, aged 27, of Cuffley, Hertfordshire, had previously entered a plea of not guilty to using the phone while at the wheel of a Range Rover in Loughton, Essex, in October 2009.

Sentencing was adjourned until September 17 and a court legal adviser said Defoe could be disqualified from driving.
