Ronaldinho reveals gratitude to Barca

AC Milan forward Ronaldinho thanked the Barcelona fans for their support during what he describes as “the best years of my career” in an open letter sent 24 hours before the two teams meet in tomorrow night’s Joan Gamper trophy at the Nou Camp.

Ronaldinho was twice named FIFA World Player of the Year in his time at Barca and was a key figure as the Spanish side won two Primera Division titles and a Champions League trophy under Frank Rijkaard.

Following that golden spell, the Brazil forward gained weight and lost form towards the end of Rijkaard’s reign and was shipped out to Milan after Pep Guardiola took over as coach.

Nevertheless he is still considered to be one of the club’s all-time greats and the Spanish giants are planning a video tribute to be screened before tomorrow’s match.

Ronaldinho also has fond memories of his time at the Nou Camp.

In an open letter published on Barca’s official website, he said: “I want to take this opportunity to say thank you for all the times we shared together in the five years I spent defending the FC Barcelona shirt.

“They were surely the best years of my personal and professional life. I sincerely believe that we enjoyed ourselves a lot during our time together.”

The 30-year-old says tomorrow’s game will be like a meeting with old friends.

“I don’t like farewells,” he said.

“I prefer to think that this is a meeting with friends. Going back to the Nou Camp is special for me.

“It is one of my favourite stadiums. I enjoyed myself so much and I believe I made the Barcelona fans enjoy themselves as well.”

The Brazilian signed off by saying: “A big, sincere hug to all of the Barcelona fans and, in particular, to (Barca president) Sandro Rosell.”
