Conan Byrne scored twice in the final minute to put the gloss on holders Sporting Fingal's safe passage through to the fourth round of the FAI Ford Cup.

Second bottom of the First Division Mervue were unlikely to catch Sporting napping again having stunned them at Morton Stadium to force this third round replay.

Liam Buckley’s side got the early goal they needed to settle down after 12 minutes when skipper Shaun Williams header home Ollie Cahill’s free-kick.

Gary O’Neill, their matchwinner in the cup final last November, then added a second five minutes after the interval when heading in Ger O'Brien's cross.

Byrne got his first right on 90 minutes when surging through to shoot past Ger Hanley. Less than 60 seconds later, Byrne was there again to lob the Meruve keeper for his second and Sporting's fourth.

Sporting now host Limerick in the fourth round on August 29.
