Spanish football federation: Del Bosque's job safe

Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque’s job is safe no matter what happens in their next two group matches at the World Cup, according to RFEF president Angel Maria Villar.

Spain suffered a shock defeat in their opening Group H match against Switzerland on Wednesday and the European Champions now face a battle to get through to the last 16.

The Iberian nation’s next game is against Honduras on Monday before they complete their group campaign with a tough-looking fixture against Chile.

The pressure is on the highly-fancied Spanish, whose defeat to Switzerland was only their second loss in 49 matches, but Del Bosque’s future is not dependent on how his team fares in the next week.

Villar, the president of the Spanish football federation (RFEF), said: “I believe in this national team, a side that has obtained some excellent results.

“There is no issue with Del Bosque because he has a contract, he renewed in December and because there is total confidence in him,

“Whatever happens at the World Cup, Del Bosque will continue as coach. I’m very sure about that.”

Del Bosque took over as coach of Spain after Luis Aragones stepped down immediately after winning Euro 2008. In December, the former Real Madrid boss was handed a new two-year contract extension which runs to 2012.
