World Cup winning French coach questions quality of current team
France’s World Cup-winning coach Aime Jacquet has questioned whether the current squad is good enough to play themselves into contention.
Jacquet led the country to victory on home soil in 1998 with a team blessed with the talents of the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Youri Djorkaeff and Patrick Vieira.
The modern-day France team face Mexico in Polokwane on Thursday after a goalless opening draw with Uruguay, and Jacquet feels a lack of talented players could cost them this time.
“The team’s had a low-key start to the tournament and they’ve been having problems for several months now,” Jacquet told FIFA.com.
“I just wonder if the players’ quality will be enough to get them back on track.
“I think the Mexico game is vital. If France don’t get a good result then we won’t have a good World Cup.
“We know that France haven’t shown their true colours yet. If we find our feet then I think we can beat Mexico.
“The players are good enough, but we have to hit top form both physically and mentally.”
