Republic of Ireland U23 1 England 2 U23
England clinically punished a poor defensive display to all but end Ireland’s hopes in the International Challenge Trophy.
Ronan Finn and Paul Byrne had half chances for the home side before England deservedly took the lead on 27 minutes.
Ireland skipper Stephen O’Donnell gifted the ball to Max Porter who set up the impressive Andrew Fleming to drill home from the edge of the area.
Billy Dennehy and Paul Byrne carved the chance of an equaliser for Finn on 34 minutes, but Kyle McFadzean blocked superbly.
England doubled their lead on 63 minutes when Fleming’s corner was headed down by Tom Cadmore for Porter to drill home at the back post.
Paddy Madden gave Ireland hope within three minutes when skipping through onto Gary McCabe’s pass to score. Both sides had late chances, but England held out to secure victory.
Ireland meet Estonia away in September needing a win to stay in the competition as England host Estonia the following month.
