Republic of Ireland defender Shane Duffy is recovering after undergoing emergency surgery at the Mater Hospital last night.

The Everton centre-back was rushed to hospital after a collision with Under-23 goalkeeper Adrian Walsh during a match between Giovanni Trapattoni's Republic of Ireland development squad, and the Ireland Under-23s.

The incident has been described as a "freak accident" after the blood supply to his liver was ruptured, with FAI medical staff saying the 18-year-old's life was saved by the operation carried out by Gerry McEntee.

After a period in intensive care he has since been moved to a recovery ward with hopes high he will make a full recovery.
