Vokes pens new deal with Wolves

Wolves striker Sam Vokes has signed a contract extension to keep him at Molineux until 2013.

Wolves striker Sam Vokes has signed a contract extension to keep him at Molineux until 2013.

The 20-year-old Wales international already had two years to run on his deal, but has now signed for an extra season to remain with the Barclays Premier League side.

Wolves defied expectation to retain their top-flight status at the first time of asking last season, although Vokes played a peripheral role making just five league appearances from the substitutes’ bench.

Vokes’ new deal suggests, however, that manager Mick McCarthy believes he has a key role to play at the club.

“It’s a great boost to me to have an extra year to my contract,” Vokes told the club’s website www.wolves.co.uk.

“And the club staying in the Premier League has just added to it. It’s nice security for me to come back for a season and know I’ve still got three years left on my deal.”

Vokes joined Wolves from Bournemouth two years ago and while he enjoyed a good run in the side during their promotion from the Coca-Cola Championship he found his time limited last term.

After failing to make a start in the Premier League he was loaned out to League One side Leeds for two months from November, but believes he has plenty to offer the Black Country outfit.

“I’ve had limited time on the pitch for Wolves this year with a few substitute appearances. But I had a good spell at Leeds which I think went well for me,” he said.

“I think I’ve still got a lot more to come. Hopefully if I get a chance next season I take it because scoring goals in the Premier League what I want to do.”
