Amond back to haunt Rovers

Padraig Amond was a hero when scoring the winner for Shamrock Rovers against Bohemians last October, but the young striker stunned the Tallaght crowd with a well-taken equaliser for new club Sligo in this entertaining draw before a crowd of 3,175.

Sligo were a mess at the back early on and Hoops were deservedly in front after six minutes.

Left-back Danny Murphy’s ball over the time found Gary Twigg utterly unmarked and the Scot controlled the ball and volleyed past Richard Brush.

Brush had earlier saved well from a Thomas Stewart header and would also deprive Chris Turner with a super stop before Sligo levelled on 36mins.

Danny Ventre fed Gary McCabe whose sublime through ball put Amond in on goal to finish with aplomb from just inside the box. Amond respectfully refused to celebrate scoring against his former club.

Sligo had the better of the second half with McCabe bringing a terrific save from Alan Mannus on 58mins.

The Sligo winger then beat three defenders to shoot narrowly wide as Sligo fully deserved the draw.
