Police arrest two over Togo football team attack

Two people have been arrested in connection with a fatal gun attack on Togo’s football team, Angolan state radio said today.

According to a brief statement, the pair were detained yesterday. No other details were immediately available.

Angolan officials have blamed Friday’s ambush on a separatist movement in the northern region of Cabinda, where the attack took place.

The Togolese team was driving to Angola to take part in the African Cup of Nations football tournament when gunmen attacked their bus.

Togo’s assistant coach and team spokesman were killed as was the Angolan bus driver.

Eight other people were wounded, including a goalkeeper who was airlifted to South Africa for treatment.
