Rangers were without centre-back Madjid Bougherra for the Champions League meeting with Unirea Urziceni.

Bougherra suffered a knee injury in training yesterday and his place in the heart of defence was filled by midfielder Lee McCulloch.

Better news for the Scottish champions was midfielder Pedro Mendes being passed fit enough to start, after missing the weekend win over St Johnstone with a thigh strain.

Walter Smith handed the task of scoring the goals to Kenny Miller, with Kris Boyd and Nacho Novo – who netted a consolation goal against Sevilla – both named on the bench.

Romanian champions Unirea also went for a lone striker in the shape of Marius Ioan Bilasco, who was supported by Dacian Varga, whose goal earned Dan Petrescu’s men a point against Stuttgart.
