McGeady's penalty lifeline can't save Celtic
FT: Rangers 2 Celtic 1
A first-half double by Kenny Miller was enough to give Rangers victory in an enthralling Old Firm derby against Celtic at Ibrox.
The former Hoops player struck twice in the first 16 minutes, but the visitors were handed a lifeline when Sasa Papac fouled Celtic’s Chinese debutant Zheng Zhi inside the box and Aiden McGeady scored from the spot.
Celtic piled forward in the second half but to no avail, and their lead at the top of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League over the Light Blues is now only one point.
As Paddy McCourt replaced the tiring Zheng, the Parkhead side were almost totally in control and in the 73rd minute Maloney missed the target from close range after he was set up by Wilson.
The game swung from end to end and in the 84th minute, after fine play by the Ibrox side down the right, Boruc stretched to tip Novo’s attempted lob over the bar before Weir headed over from Mendes’ corner.
The Ibrox side were hanging on in the final moments but in the end Miller’s double proved enough.
