Manchester United drew a first-half blank as they opened their quest to reach a third successive Champions League final against Besiktas in Istanbul.

Alex Ferguson’s side produced a creditable performance on the banks of the Bosphorus, without really looking like cracking a tough Besiktas defence.

Nemanja Vidic and Wayne Rooney had chances, while Nani curled a free-kick over.

The hosts came closest to scoring though when Serdar Ozkan’s shot looped over Ben Foster and dropped just over the bar after it had deflected off Jonny Evans.
