Kerr's Faroe Islands celebrate rare win

Faroe Islands 2 Lithuania 1

Former Republic of Ireland manager Brian Kerr guided Faroe Islands achieved a rare win in World Cup qualifying tonight.

Arnbiorn Hansen grabbed the winner as the Faroes dashing Lithuania’s faint hopes of a late charge towards the top two in Group Seven.

Lithuania approached the match in Toftir five points behind France, who stood second in the pool, after claiming three wins from seven games.

However, they fell behind after 15 minutes when Suni Olsen opened the scoring for the home side.

Tomas Danilevic equalised eight minutes later to revive Lithuania’s hopes of returning from the tricky trip with all three points.

But Hansen had the decisive say, restoring Faroe Islands’ lead after 35 minutes, and Kerr’s team held on for their first World Cup qualifying win since their September 2001 victory over Luxembourg.
