Derry City 1 St. Patrick’s Athletic 0
Despite having to play for an hour with ten men, Ciaran Martyn struck a late winner for Derry to complete a miserable week for St. Pat’s.
It was the fourth defeat in five league games for Jeff Kenna’s Saints and comes on the back of their emphatic 3-0 loss away to Steaua Bucharest in the Europa League last Thursday.
St. Pat’s thus still hover just three points above the relegation play-off places while the win moves Derry to within three points of third-placed Cork City.
Derry had former St. Pat’s defender, and stand-in skipper, Clive Delaney, sent off by Dublin referee Paul Tuite after 31 minutes for a deliberate handball, his second booking following an earlier foul on Mark Quigley.
Defending well, Derry struck for the only goal of the game came ten minutes from time when Thomas Stewart headed Tam McManus’ cross to the back post where substitute Martyn volleyed past Gary Rogers.
