Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson reacted to the defeat by Burnley by making seven changes at the DW Stadium.

Serbian defender Nemanja Vidic returned to the side after a calf injury and Gary Neville was also included. Dimitar Berbatov partnered Wayne Rooney - looking for his 100th goal for United – in attack, with Michael Owen standing down.

There were also places for Antonio Valencia, against his former club, plus Paul Scholes, Darren Fletcher and Nani.

Mohamed Diame was handed his debut for Wigan after sealing his move only hours before kick-off.

He replaced Michael Brown in the only change to the side that lost to Wolves.

Wigan: Kirkland, Melchiot, Scharner, Bramble, Figueroa, N’Zogbia, Thomas, Diame, Koumas, Gomez, Rodallega.

Subs: Pollitt, Edman, Scotland, Sinclair, Boyce, McCarthy, King.

Man Utd: Foster, Neville, Vidic, Jonathan Evans, Evra, Valencia, Fletcher, Scholes, Nani, Rooney, Berbatov.
