A late Raffaele Cretaro goal avenged Tuesday's 4-0 league defeat as Sligo put last season’s finalists Derry out of the FAI Ford Cup to advance to the quarter-finals.

The winner came on 85 minutes in controversial circumstances, however.

Derry were penalised for a foul on Sligo winger Eoin Doyle just outside the box. Cork referee Anthony Buttimer allowed Cretaro to take the free quickly and he shot past Ger Doherty.

Derry’s vehement protests that the goal shouldn’t have been given, as they weren't ready, were waved away.

It was a bitter pill for Derry to swallow as just a minute before Thomas Stewart looked set to put them in front when latching onto Sligo skipper Conor O'Grady's short back header, but Richard Brush made a terrific save.
