Turner’s Cross clash crucial in deciding title destiny

Cork City can stay in touch at the top of the Premier Division table if they can beat Shamrock Rovers at Turner’s Cross, kick-off 7.45pm.

A win for Rovers could end City’s title ambitions although Ian Bermingham (knee) remains sidelined for Michael O’Neill’s side.

Sean O’Connor and Dessie Baker return after suspension, while Paddy Kavanagh will be the subject of a late fitness test.

Hoops boss O’Neill said: “It’s good that Dessie and Sean are back in contention, and we’re hopeful that Paddy will be okay, but it’s too early to say.

“Once again, we know this will be a tough game – a very tough game. But we got a draw at Turner’s Cross earlier in the season and we’ve strengthened the squad since then.

“It’s an opportunity for us to put nine points between ourselves and Cork City. That would be a good gap to have at this point in the season - and that’s our target.”

For City, Gareth Cambridge is likely to return from a hamstring injury he picked up in the win over Bray, while Joe Gamble will also be available despite a knee problem.

Speaking ahead of the game City boss Paul Doolin said: “Regardless of Rovers’ good form, we have to go into the game looking to claim three points, particularly after our defeat on Friday night.

“We have to aim to stay up at the top of the table and qualify for Europe, and I believe this would be a fantastic achievement considering everything that has happened.

“Shamrock Rovers come into Tuesday’s game in a really good vein of form and will be tough opponents.”
