Robinson itching to begin new era

Shane Robinson is back with Shamrock Rovers for the second time in his career and he believes that his return is in sync with a historical period in the club’s history.

The Hoops will finally end their time without a home venue when they host Sligo Rovers in the brand new Tallaght Stadium on Friday evening.

Robinson, who has been made captain this term, never thought that he would still be playing in a professional capacity before Rovers were able to call somewhere home again.

The talented midfielder was superb in his first spell at the club, although he wants to have an even bigger impact on his return as he is eager to lift Michael O’Neill’s side back into the top tier of League of Ireland football.

With a loyal core of supporters driving the club forward, the first game in the new stadium will be quite a special day and Robinson wants to use it to give something back to the fans as Rovers go in search of a home win.

“It’ll be a great day to be going out in Tallaght because it’s something that I wanted to do five years ago, and I was forced to leave the club because it didn’t look like happening,” said Robinson.

“Every cloud has a silver lining. I’d signed with Drogheda and I was thinking I’d be there for three more years, but to get this opportunity to come back to Rovers is brilliant.

“The support out in Bray last was great (for the first game of the season). You don’t get that at any other club, really.

“Hopefully we can put on a show every time we go to Tallaght and play positive football.”
