The England midfielder collected his fifth booking of the campaign during the 2-0 win at Blackburn and must serve a one-match suspension. Steve Sidwell is the likely candidate to replace the 28-year-old.

Villa are optimistic defender Luke Young will have recovered from the toe injury which forced him to withdraw from the England squad to face Spain in midweek.

Martin O’Neill’s side have already triumphed 3-2 at Everton in the Barclays Premier League this season during their club record run of seven successive away league wins.
