Ashley Young returned to the starting line-up after a three-match ban and was named acting captain in the absence of the rested Gareth Barry.

John Carew was given his first start for nearly three months up front after recovering from a back problem.

Doncaster midfielder Martin Woods, who hit the woodwork twice in the goalless draw with Villa the first time the teams met, played after shaking off a virus which had forced him to miss the 1-1 draw at Norwich on Friday.
