West Brom have signed defensive midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu on loan from Paris St Germain until the end of the season with a view to a permanent deal.

The 22-year-old, who was born in Kinshasa and has been capped seven times by the Democratic Republic of Congo, becomes the Baggies’ third signing of the transfer window after Jay Simpson and Marc-Antoine Fortune, who have also joined on loan.

Mulumbu signed his first professional contract with PSG in 2006 and went on to make 68 appearances for the Ligue 1 club, scoring once.

Mulumbu spent last season on loan at Ligue 2 outfit Amiens, for whom he played 23 matches.

Baggies boss Tony Mowbray appears to consider the player one for the future, describing him as a “young player with potential...who won’t instantly impact on our first team”, on the club’s website, www.wba.co.uk.

Mulumbu is not eligible for the FA Cup replay against Burnley tomorrow but could make his debut against Newcastle on Saturday.
