Football star Steven Gerrard is due back for training today after he was charged with assaulting a club DJ.

The Liverpool player is expected to join other Anfield players at their Melwood training ground after a two-day break.

So far the father-of-two has remained tight-lipped about the incident, but his club yesterday issued a statement publicly supporting him.

The England midfielder was arrested by Merseyside Police in the early hours of Monday morning after a night out with friends in Southport.

The Liverpool captain is accused of affray and assaulting part-time DJ and businessman Marcus McGee, 34.

Mr McGee allegedly lost a tooth and needed stitches to his face after a brawl at the Lounge Inn.

Gerrard, who has led Liverpool to the top of the Premier League this season, was charged along with John Doran, 29, and Ian Gerard Smith, 19, both of Huyton, where Gerrard grew up.

The three will appear before magistrates at the end of January.
