Wayne Rooney was named on the bench as Manchester United began their Club World Cup campaign with a semi-final against J.League outfit Gamba Osaka in Yokohama tonight.

Rooney suffered a minor knock in training on Tuesday and Alex Ferguson decided against risking the England international, preferring Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo in attack.

As expected, old stagers Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes were all included against a Gamba side whose main threat was expected to come from Yasuhito Endo and Brazilian forward Lucas.
