Derry impress against a weak Galway United
Derry City 2 Galway United 0
Having beaten them in the FAI Ford Cup semi-final last week, Derry put a huge dent in Galway's survival hopes in doing northwest neighbours Finn Harps a big favour.
Derry took the lead after ten minutes. Goalkeeper Gary Rogers initially parried away a Kevin Deery shot, but Gareth McGlynn hooked the rebound to the net despite the best efforts of central defender Alan Keane to clear.
Derry might have scored again just before half time, but Rogers saved well from Kevin Deery's header.
Niall McGinn doubled Derry's lead on 62 minutes when he looped a header home from McGlynn's right wing cross.
Galway blew a chance to get back into the game seven minutes later when Jay O'Shea, who'd won the penalty, saw his spot kick saved by Ger Doherty.
Galway, two points from safelty, now host Finn Harps on Friday in a real relegation six-pointer.
