An examiner has been appointed by the High Court in a bid to save troubled football club Drogheda United.

Last week Ms Justice Finlay Geoghan appointed interim examiner Kieran McCarthy of Hughes Blakes Accountants.

She accepted that the company had a reasonable prospect of survival.

It means that the club is under the protection of the High Court and the examiner will put a rescue plan in place and seek investors for the club.

The club has said it has significant debts to creditors, including the Revenue Commissioners.

Mr McCarthy will be due back before the High Court with an examiners' report in a number of months.
