Derry City through to semi-finals of Setanta Sports Cup
St. Patrick's Athletic 0 Derry City 1
A poacher's goal from Kevin McHugh put Derry City through to the semi-finals of the Setanta Sports Cup for the first time.
The result was no more than Stephen Kenny's Candystripes deserved and one that leaves St. Patrick's now needing to win at Glentoran in their final match, and hope that Linfield don't beat Derry at the Brandywell, if they are to qualify for the last four.
Save for Derek O'Brien's wasted chance in the first minute and a long-range shot from Keith Fahey which Ger Doherty saved, Derry ran a jaded looking Saints ragged in the first half and were good value for their match winning interval lead.
That came on 33 minutes when left-back Steven Gray worked a one-two with Kevin Deery from a throw to cross from the left had and McHugh fired past Barry Ryan.
Ryan had earlier saved brilliantly from a Barry Molloy header and a McHugh shot, while the Saints' keeper also had to bat away a Sammy Morrow shot just before the break to keep his side in the match.
