Newcastle fans hoping for Keegan resolution

Newcastle fans are today hoping for further clarity on the future of manager Kevin Keegan after two full days of fevered speculation on Tyneside.

The club yesterday moved to expand upon Tuesday’s initial confirmation they had not sacked Keegan – contrary to a spate of media reports – and confirmed a dialogue that began on Monday was in progress but he remained in charge at St James’ Park.

Nevertheless, it would be no surprise if today brought fresh news on the subject – either from Keegan, who has yet to speak publicly about his position, or the club.

Newcastle’s official statement read: “Newcastle United Football Club can confirm that discussions are ongoing between the board and Kevin Keegan.

“Both the club and Kevin would like to reiterate that Kevin remains as manager.

“He has not resigned nor has he been sacked, as has been confirmed in respective statements made by Kevin and Newcastle United Football Club.”

League Managers’ Association chief executive Richard Bevan has spoken to Keegan on the issue and his comments mirrored those of the Magpies.

“He has not resigned,” confirmed Bevan.

“He is in a difficult position – he’ll be discussing really important issues with the Newcastle board over the next few days.”

He added: “It is not ideal having to speak on managers’ positions so early in the season but I was speaking to Kevin Keegan at length last night.”

The drama over Keegan’s situation was being played out as West Ham counterpart Alan Curbishley resigned from his post citing “a breach of trust and confidence” over “significant player decisions without involving me”.

He, like Keegan, had also called on the services of the LMA, although no solution could be found at Upton Park.

Keegan may have some sympathy having expressed his misgivings over his club’s summer recruitment policy, a matter that, along with the role of executive director (football) Dennis Wise, has been at the centre of this week’s developments.
