Late winner keep Pat's title aspirations alive

St. Patrick's Athletic 1 Sligo Rovers 0

Damien Lynch scored a late, late winner to keep St. Patrick's title aspiration alive at Richmond Park tonight.

Looking set to drop two valuable points in their pursuit of Bohemians, Saints, despite being far from their best, struck for a deserved winner two minutes into stoppage time when Sligo keeper Richard Brush spilled a Keith Fahey drive and captain Lynch reacted quickest to stab the loose ball home at the foot of a post.

The win, only Saints second in five games, reduces Bohs lead to seven points - though Pat Fenlon's Gypsies can regain their ten point lead should they beat Drogheda at Dalymount in a back match tomorrow night.

The result was harsh on Sligo who frustrated Saints throughout.

Despite being sluggish for much of the first half, Saints did create the best chance, forcing Brush into the stop of the half from Gary Dempsey's header.

Saints enjoyed much of the ball in the second half, but Sligo defended well with chances for Mark Quigley and Fahey being wasted before snatching it right at the death.
