Timmy Purcell earned College a vital win in their battle to avoid relegation as fellow strugglers Galway finished with ten men at Terryland Park.

UCD had a blistering start with the lead goal after just two minutes Shane Fitzgerald crossed and Brian King shot home.

It got worse for Galway on 12 minutes when central defender John Lester was shown a straight red card from referee Declan Hanney for a challenge on Purcell.

But Galway responded well and twice came close to levelling through Jay O'Shea before half time.

Jeff Kenna's side did equalise on 61 minutes when Alan Murphy's shot was deflected past Matt Gregg.

But Purcell won it for college six minute from time, scooping home after Fitzgerald's shot was blocked.
