McClaren set to lose midfielder

Schalke general manager Andreas Muller expects to the club to complete the signing of FC Twente midfielder Orlando Engelaar this week.

The Holland international is reportedly keen to link up with former Twente coach Fred Rutten at the Arena AufSchalke.

Muller told the Bild newspaper: “I hope that we can sort out the transfer this week. Orlando only wants to come to us, he had clearly earlier already opted for Schalke. That is our trump card.”

Eredivisie outfit Ajax and a number of English Premier League clubs have been linked with a move for Engelaar, but Muller is adamant he is on his way to the Bundesliga.

He said: “I know that he is very sought-after. But Orlando is no longer [considering his options]. I am certain that he is coming to us.”

Engelaar excelled in a holding midfield role at Euro 2008, playing a key role in Holland’s stunning group wins over Italy and France before their quarter-final defeat to Russia.

Muller also confirmed that Schalke have not received any approaches for either Ivan Rakitic or Jermaine Jones, who have been linked with moves to Chelsea and Manchester United respectively.

“Up until now no club has waved a fat cheque for millions in front of me,” he said.

“Basically we don’t want to sell either, and also Schalke is not the worst place for them.”
