McDonald set for new deal

Celtic have begun talks to extend the contract of top scorer Scott McDonald.

The Australian scored 31 goals for the club after signing for £700,000 from Motherwell last summer.

After helping Celtic clinch the Clydesdale Bank Premier League title on Thursday, he wants more glory nights.

McDonald said: “My agent, Lou Sticca, flew from Australia for talks with Peter Lawwell last week. He told me that things had gone well but I said I didn’t want to know any of the details.

“I wanted to concentrate on our match against Dundee United and winning the title. Everything else could wait. Now that we’ve won it, it’s the most incredible feeling I’ve experienced, and I want more of this.

“That’s why I’m so thrilled at the prospect of signing a new deal and making sure I’ve got a few more years of winning trophies for Celtic in front of me.”

Japan midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura is also keen to stay at Celtic after their title triumph gave him an extra fortnight off.

The 29-year-old, who will represent his country in the Kirin Cup, has completed his three-year contract but Celtic have a 12-month option.

Nakamura said: “It is a big thing for me that we have gone straight into the Champions League.
