Should Hodgson’s team lose and two of Birmingham, Bolton and Reading win, they will be down showing how vital a second away victory of the season was.

For City, a triumph in their final home game would maintain hopes of qualifying for Europe next term, although their hopes were not helped by the absence of skipper Richard Dunne, who failed to recover from a hamstring injury.
