Wigan left-back Erik Edman is set to be out for six months after rupturing knee ligament.
The Latics confirmed the extent of the damage today, after the defender was injured in last weekend’s Barclays Premier League match at Blackburn.
Swede Edman ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament to his left knee. He will return to Sweden for surgery soon.
A club statement added: “It is a big blow for club and player, because Edman has been in sensational form since breaking into the side following his January move from Rennes.”
Wigan boss Steve Bruce must now consider how to cover for Edman, with Kevin Kilbane the most obvious player to fill in at left-back.
“It’s a real shame, because Erik has looked so natural – and we will certainly miss him,” Bruce told his club’s official website, www.wiganlatics.premiumtv.
“He’s also a lovely lad and a terrific professional. But he’ll get over this and be back for us, I’m sure. Everyone at the club wishes him the best.”
