Joe Kendrick scored a terrific goal to provide the highlight as champions Drogheda got the defence of their title up and running with this emphatic win over last year's First Division winners.

The champions finally broke their goal duck in the league to take a 15th minute lead.

Adam Hughes flicked on Paul Keegan's corner and defender Graham Gartland stabbed the ball past James McCarthy.

Kendrick then struck to double Drogheda's lead on 48 minutes. Following a surging run and cross, the ball came back to the left-back who unleashed a left foot drive that flew into the back of the net.

Ollie Cahill added a third goal on 58 minutes when he was left totally unmarked at the back post to loop home Shane Robinson's cross.
