Manchester City manager Sven Goran-Eriksson, who succeeded Keegan as England described Keegan’s return to football as “fantastic”.

“I think he’s a good choice. He’s been there before,” The Swede told Sky Sports News.

“He’s a great man, a big man all over the world – especially in Newcastle he’s very, very big. Kevin Keegan back in football, in the Premier League, is fantastic.”

West Ham manager Alan Curbishley added: “Nothing surprises me anymore. Kevin may have had no intention of coming back until this job arose.

“Newcastle have brought a manger in who’s perhaps not going to have the pressure others have had.”
