UEFA to investigate 15 cases of alleged match-fixing

UEFA have confirmed they are investigating 15 matches which may have been fixed.

European football's governing body are working in conjunction with Europol to look into the games.

A UEFA spokesman said the games were all played this season, although they would not say which competitions the matches were played in for fear of affecting the ongoing investigation.

It is reported by German magazine Spiegel that the games concerned could include Champions League qualifiers, UEFA Cup ties and qualifiers, Intertoto Cup games and a Euro 2008 qualifier.

A UEFA spokesman told PA Sport: "It is correct that we are currently investigating 15 matches in co-operation with Europol."

The topic was raised at a two-day conference in Brussels earlier this week convened principally to tackle hooligan violence in sport.

UEFA president Michel Platini and European Commission vice-president Franco Frattini have agreed to hold a conference next year to look at “criminal phenomena” in sport, such as money-laundering, match-fixing and illegal betting.

Meanwhile, the investigation into the 15 suspect games will continue, although UEFA are not putting any time-frame on when it might be complete.
